Parent Resources

Whether you’re a first-time band parent or your kids’ violin duo is becoming a trio, we’re here to support you—and so is your child’s band or orchestra director. Below, you’ll find helpful links, care tips, and guidance to make the musical journey smoother for everyone at home.

Your Band or Orchestra Director is Your Best Resource

Every school program is unique—and your child’s director is the expert when it comes to specific expectations, music selections, performance schedules, and more. If you ever have a question about…

  • What instrument your student should play
  • How often they should be practicing
  • What supplies they need
  • Upcoming concerts or events

…start by asking the director! They’ll either answer directly or point you in the right direction.

Basic Instrument Care at Home

Helping your child care for their instrument builds responsibility and prevents expensive repairs. Here are some general tips for common band and orchestra instruments:

  • Always store the instrument in its case when not in use
  • Never force a part that doesn’t move easily—ask for help
  • Wipe down instruments after playing to remove moisture and oils
  • Keep instruments out of extreme temperatures (cars, garages, etc.)
  • Don’t try home repairs, no matter how simple they look—get help from us or child’s teacher

Encouraging Your Young Musician

Music takes time and patience. You can help your child succeed just by cheering them on! Here are a few ideas:

  • Celebrate small milestones—like learning a new scale or performing their first concert
  • Set aside a regular practice time
  • Create a quiet, distraction-free space for playing
  • Encourage them to perform for family or friends
  • Remind them (and yourself) that progress takes time
